CI Case 272

Cryonics Institute Case Report for Patient Number 272
CI patient #272 was a 93 year old male from Maryland. The patient was a CI member at the time of his death.
The patient died on June 23, 2025 at a local hospital. The patient was immediately cooled with ice and the local funeral home began making transportation arrangements. The patient was flown to Detroit Metro Airport and arrived at the CI facility at 8:45 pm on June 24, 2025.
Upon the patient’s arrival at the CI facility, he was transferred to the operating table in the perfusion room. The patient’s temperature was 9c.
Hillary McCauley performed the perfusion. The perfusion started at 9:45 pm and was stopped at 11:40 pm. During the perfusion there were 3 liters of 5% EG solution, 4 liters of 10% EG solution, 5 liters of 30% EG solution used, and 8 liters of 70% VM1 solution used. A full body perfusion was attempted, but the patient’s abdomen began to swell very quickly, so the body perfusion was stopped. The perfusion of the head continued until the flow from the jugular veins stopped and facial swelling began. The decision was made to stop perfusion to avoid pressure in the brain. The final refractive index of the effluents exiting the right jugular vein was 1.4029. The final refractive index of the effluents exiting the left jugular vein was 1.4061. The average perfusion pressure was held at 128mmHg and metal cannulas were used. Flow rate was held at 0.2 L/min for the perfusion. The nasal temperature was 4.1c at the end of the perfusion.
The patient was then transferred to the dry ice holding unit to cool to -80c while a current cooling program finished on another patient. The patient was then transferred to the computer controlled cooling chamber to cool to liquid nitrogen temperature. The human vitrification program was selected and the time needed to cool the patient to liquid nitrogen temperature was five days and 11 hours. The patient was then placed in a cryostat for long-term cryonic storage.
