CI Case 259

Cryonics Institute Case Report for Patient Number 259
CI patient #259 was a 78 year old male from Florida. The patient was a CI member at the time of his death.
The patient died at a hospice facility on August 4th, 2024 at about 6:10pm. The hospice nurses cooled the patient by surrounding him with packs of ice. The cooperating funeral director picked the patient up and returned to his facility where further cooling in ice took place while transportation arrangements were made. The patient arrived at the CI facility on August 5th at 11:40pm. Several flight delays slowed the transport arrangements.
The nasal temperature upon his arrival was 8.4c. The perfusion started at 12:28am. The perfusion was completed at 2:25am. During the perfusion there were 6 liters of 30% Eg solution used, and 22 liters of 70% VM1 solution used. The final refractive index of the effluents exiting the right jugular vein was 1.4079. The final refractive index of the effluents exiting the left jugular vein was 1.4201. The average perfusion pressure was held at 119mm and metal cannulas were used. Flow rate started at .57 liters per minute and was reduced to 0.26 liters per minute by the end of the perfusion. The nasal temperature was .3c at the end of the perfusion.
The flow started good with very few blood clots, but the flow quickly slowed. There was distention of the abdomen, so the perfusion to the body was stopped at 12:40am. The perfusion was ended because the flow almost stopped and there were no gains made in the refractive index.
The patient was then transferred to the computer controlled cooling chamber to cool to liquid nitrogen temperature. The human vitrification program was selected and the time needed to cool the patient to liquid nitrogen temperature was five days and 11 hours. The patient was then placed in a cryostat for long-term cryonic storage.
