CI Case 245
Cryonics Institute Case Report for Patient Number 245
CI patient #245 was a 45 year old male from California. The patient was a CI member at the time of his death. The patient was under hospice care in a hospice facility.
The patient was pronounced legally dead by Hospice at approximately 1:45 PM on September 12th 2023. Suspended Animation was present at the time of death and provided standby, stabilization and transport services to the patient. Upon obtaining a Burial Transit Permit the patient was flown to the CI facility and arrived at approximately 8:59 PM on September 13th, 2023 approximately 31 hours and 15 minutes after legal death.
Upon the patient’s arrival at the CI facility, he was transferred to the operating table in the perfusion room and prepared for perfusion. A full body perfusion was performed via the aorta. The perfusion was started at 9:27 PM and it was completed at 10:37 PM. During the perfusion there were 5 liters of 10% Eg solution and 5 liters of 30% Eg solution used, and 45 liters of 70% VM1 solution used. The final refractive index of the effluents exiting inferior vena cava was 1.4194. The perfusion was ended before a refractive index of 1.42 was reached because of noted edema in the face and eyes.
The average perfusion pressure was held at 120mm. Flow rate averaged at 0.615 liters per minute. The nasal temperature was -4.9c at the end of the perfusion. There were minimal blood clots noted during the perfusion and bronzing of the skin was visible. There was some distention of the ocular area and face.
The patient was then transferred to the computer controlled cooling unit to cool to liquid nitrogen temperature. The human vitrification program was selected and the time needed to cool the patient to liquid nitrogen temperature was five days and 11 hours. The patient was then placed in a cryostat for long-term cryonic storage.
