CI Case 237
Cryonics Institute Case Report for Patient Number 237
CI patient #237 was a 63 year old male from New York. The patient was a CI member at the time of his death.
The patient died at home, unexpectedly, at 3:15am on December 21, 2022. The patient’s partner called emergency responders and the patient was taken to the county morgue. After several hours of communications, the cooperating funeral director and CI were able to convince the coroner to not autopsy the patient. The patient was released from the morgue at 7pm. The patient was then packed in ice and driven to the CI facility.
The patient arrived at the CI facility on December 22, 2022 at 4am, about 25 hours after death.
The nasal temperature of the patient upon arrival was 3.3c. Perfusion started at 4:40am. Because of the patient received no heparin, and because the patient was not cooled promptly or completely from the point of death until release from the morgue, a decision was made to attempt perfusion of the head only. The perfusion started with 4 liters of 30% Eg solution and then switched to 70% VM1 solution. There were many blood clots noted during the perfusion. The patients head quickly started showing signs of edema. After 5 liters of 70% VM1, the perfusion was terminated at 5:10 am because of excessive edema and the return flow had slowed dramatically. The nasal temperature was -3c. No measurements of the effluents from the jugular veins were taken because of the poor return.
The patient was then cooled to -196 over a period of 60 hours and placed in a cryostat for long-term cryonic storage.
