CI Case 229
Cryonics Institute Case Report for Patient Number 229
CI patient #229 was a 86 year old male from New York. The patient was a CI member at the time of his death.
The patient died in a hospital at approximately 5am on August 2nd, 2022. The patient donated his organs for research, against CI’s recommendation, and CI had to wait for the organ removal to be completed. A local funeral director packed the patient in ice once the organ removal was complete and arranged to have him flown to Michigan.
The patient arrived at the CI facility on August 2nd at 10pm. The nasal temperature upon arrival was 9c. The perfusion was started at 10:26pm, and terminated at 11pm. Only the head was perfused. 2.5 liters of 30% EG were used and 8 liters of 70% VM1 were used. The perfusion was stopped early due to edema in the patient’s head and lack of flow. Because of the way the organ harvest was conducted, it was not possible to get readings of the effluents exiting the body during perfusion.
The patient was then transferred to the computer controlled cooling chamber to cool to liquid nitrogen temperature. The human vitrification program was selected and the time needed to cool the patient to liquid nitrogen temperature was 5 days and 11 hours. The patient was then placed in a cryostat for long-term cryonic storage.
