CI Case 219
Cryonics Institute Case Report for Patient Number 219
CI patient #219 was an 88 year old female from Connecticut. The patient was a CI member at the time of her death.
The patient died in a nursing home under hospice care at approximately 8 pm on January 15, 2022. The nursing home staff cooled the patient by applying ice packs and called the funeral home that was prepared to help. The funeral home removed the patient from the nursing home and took her to the funeral home where she was put in refrigeration and more ice was added. The next day arrangements were made to drive the patient to CI, but it took much longer than normal because of a snow storm.
The patient arrived at the CI facility at 6am on the 17th of January, about 34 hours after death. The nasal temperature upon his arrival was 1.6c.
Only the head was perfused due to the amount of time that had passed from the time of death until the start of perfusion. Three liters of 30% EG were used and then perfusion with 70% VM1 started. However, after about 5 liters of VM1, there was very little flow from the jugular veins and there was considerable edema in the patient’s head. The perfusion was terminated because of that.
The patient was then transferred to the computer controlled cooling chamber to cool to liquid nitrogen temperature. The human vitrification program was selected and the time needed to cool the patient to liquid nitrogen temperature was five days and 11 hours. The patient was then placed in a cryostat for long-term cryonic storage.
