CI Case 218
Cryonics Institute Case Report for Patient Number 218
CI patient #218 was a 42 year old male from Michigan. The patient was a CI member at the time of his death.
The patient died at a local hospital at approximately 7:30 pm on January 15th, 2022. The hospital called a funeral director to pick up the patient and the funeral director held him in ice at his funeral home until the following day. CI was not aware that the patient was hospitalized and nobody made CI aware that a member had died until about 15 hours after the patient had died. The funeral director was instructed to bring the patient to the CI facility. The patient arrived at the CI facility at 2:30pm on January 16th.
The perfusion started at 3:15pm. The perfusion was completed at 4:45pm. During the perfusion there were 3 liters of 30% Eg solution used, and 26 liters of 70% VM1 solution used. The patient’s head was perfused, but the body was not due to the amount of time after death and because there was edema noted in the body. The final refractive index of the effluents exiting the right jugular vein was 1.4210. The final refractive index of the effluents exiting the left jugular vein was 1.4217. The average perfusion pressure was held at 117mm and metal cannulas were used. The flow rate averaged .43 liters/minute. The nasal temperature was -5.2c at the end of the perfusion.
There were no blood clots noted during the perfusion and there was good flow from both of the jugular veins. Significant dehydration of the head and face was noted along with a bronzing of the skin and no swelling.
The patient was then transferred to the computer controlled cooling chamber to cool to liquid nitrogen temperature. The human vitrification program was selected and the time needed to cool the patient to liquid nitrogen temperature was five days and 13 hours. The patient was then placed in a cryostat for long-term cryonic storage.
