CI Case 207
Cryonics Institute Case Report for Patient Number 207
CI patient #207 was a 72 year old male from Michigan. The patient was a CI member at the time of his death.
The patient died in a nursing facility under hospice care at 8:31am on May 20th, 2021. The nurses at the facility packed bags of ice around the patients head and neck. The patient was then transported to the CI facility, while being cooled with ice packs.
The patient arrived at the CI facility at 11:10am. Upon the patient’s arrival at the CI facility, he was transferred to the operating table in the perfusion room and was immediately covered with more ice. The nasal temperature upon his arrival was 20.9c.
Kristen Orme and Sara Walsh performed the perfusion. The perfusion was completed at 1:10pm. During the perfusion there were 5 liters of 10% Eg solution and 5 liters of 30% Eg solution used, and 32 liters of 70% VM1 solution used. The final refractive index of the effluents exiting the right jugular vein was 1.4213. Sampling from the left jugular was not possible due to large amounts of cancerous tumors on the left side of the patient’s neck and shoulder. The average perfusion pressure was held at 118mm and metal cannulas were used. Flow rate started at 2.9 liters per minute and was reduced to 1.1 liters per minute by the end of the perfusion. The nasal temperature was -5.4c at the end of the perfusion.
There were no blood clots noted during the perfusion. Significant dehydration of the head and face was noted. There was slight distention of the abdomen, so the perfusion to the body was stopped at 12:50 pm. The perfusion to both the head and body was successful.
The patient was then transferred to the computer controlled cooling chamber to cool to liquid nitrogen temperature. The human vitrification program was selected and the time needed to cool the patient to liquid nitrogen temperature was five days and 11 hours. The patient was then placed in a cryostat for long-term cryonic storage.
