CI Case 201
Cryonics Institute Case Report for Patient Number 201
CI patient #201 was a 90 year old male from New York, who died in Germany. The patient was a CI member at the time of his death. The patient died in Germany on January 8th and the Cryonics Germany group perfused him and cooled him in dry ice. He was held in dry ice until the transit permit and a flight could be arranged.
Following is the case report provided by Cryonics Germany.
- “On Friday, Jan. 8th 2021 Prof. Peter Gouras, born 15.04 1930, passed away at 5.18 p.m.
- Klaus Sames had been in contact with Dr. Eckhart Gouras, son of the deceased, to plan the cryonics suspension and Benni Hampel, whom he had informed, also gave advise in cooperation with Dr. Emil Kendziorra concerning the stabilization.
- No coagulant was given since the patient had suffered from a severe impairment of blood coagulation. Klaus had provided a doctor’s guidance for cryonics suspension, but no medicals were given post mortem.
- The medical inquest normally lasting more than 2 hrs. needed 1hr and 45 min. It could be held short on entreaty of E. Gouras.
- During that time the room was cooled as well as possible with open windows.
- The transport to the funeral home in Bühl lasted 10min.
- At 7 p.m. the body was covered with 150 Kg of crushed ice.
- The transport to Bayreuth started at 7.15 p.m.
- Transport arrived at 10.22 p.m. at the funeral home Himml (director Alexander Christ) in Bayreuth, where the leading embalmer Robert Voeth and the embalmers Daniel Streidt (recorder and transporter, member of the Ulm Cryonics Project ) and the embalmer Max Christ started perfusion. Klaus has been in steady phone contact with the team.
- The patient and all solutions were kept cool during the total procedure.
- The right and left carotid arteries have been cannulated and outflow was from both jugular veins
- Of each concentration of the solution a smaller volume was perfused in direction to the brain pumping equal volums to both carotid arteries respectively and a major volume went to the body.
- An embalmers pump was used at low flow. Pressure was at first 0.5 bar and later 0.7 bar.
- We were in lack of a washout solution and the diluted ethylenglycol solutions and used VM1 dilutions instead hoping that there is no adverse effect.
- From 10.45- to 11 p.m. 10L of 5%ic VM1 was applied, 3L running to the head and (turning cannulas) 7L to the body.
- From 11 to 11.45 p.m. 2L (of 7) of 10%tic VM1 were pumped to the brain and 5L to the body. The effluent showed still a red staining.
- Perfusion with 30% VM1 started at 11.46 with 10L. 3L were perfused via the brain and 7 via the body. Some small coagula left the right jugular vein, but none was seen at the right.
Perfusion with 12L of 70%ic VM1 followed with 4L to the head and 8L to the body. The outflow was clear like water the skin went pale and the extremities shrank, while the abdomen did not change (no swelling).
The perfusion ended at 3.50 a.m. at Saturday. Since no dry ice could be ordered at the weekend, the body was covered with more crushed ice and stored in a cooling chamber at -14°C up to Monday. Then the body was kept in dry ice and more dry ice was applied before the flight.”:
The patient was flown to Chicago O’Hare Airport on January 15, 2021, where he was picked up and brought to the CI facility. The patient arrived at the CI facility on January 16th at 3:30am
The patient was then transferred to the computer controlled cooling chamber to cool to liquid nitrogen temperature. The human vitrification program was selected and the time needed to cool the patient to liquid nitrogen temperature was five and a half days. The patient was then placed in a cryostat for long-term cryonic storage.
