CI Case 170
CI patient #170 was an 81 year old male from California. The patient was a CI member at the time of his death.
The patient died in the hospital on June 10, 2018. The patient had chosen a funeral home well in advance for his transportation, so the patient was taken to the funeral home where he was cooled down with water ice. Given the circumstances of the situation, the patient was not able to be perfused and was frozen in dry ice at the funeral home. The paperwork for transportation was obtained and arrangements were made to send the patient to the CI facility.
The patient arrived at the CI facility on June 16, 2018, approximately six days after death. The patient was covered with ice sheets that had been cooled to dry ice temperature, so the patient was kept frozen through transportation. The patient was then placed into the computer controlled cooling chamber to cool to liquid nitrogen temperature. The human cooling program from dry ice was selected and the time needed to cool the patient to liquid nitrogen temperature was 24 hours. The patient was then placed in a cryostat for long-term cryonic storage.
