CI Case 169
CI patient #169 was a 77 year old female from Peru. The patient was not a CI member at the time of her death.
The patient died at home on May 2, 2015. The patient was cooled in water ice immediately after death and was then moved to a dewar of liquid nitrogen that was manufactured by the next of kin’s company. The patient’s next of kin contacted CI about a year after the death had occurred and instructions were given for how to make her a patient at CI. The next of kin kept the patient in the dewar of liquid nitrogen until they were able to meet the requirements for membership and cryopreservation with CI. The next of kin contracted with a local funeral home to obtain the necessary paperwork for transportation, pack her in dry ice, and send her to our facility. A perfusion was not able to be performed due to these circumstances.
The patient arrived at the CI facility on May 29, 2018, approximately three years after death. There was minimal dry ice in the container upon her arrival, but the patient was still completely frozen. The patient was then placed into the computer controlled cooling chamber to cool to liquid nitrogen temperature. The human cooling program from dry ice was selected and the time needed to cool the patient to liquid nitrogen temperature was 24 hours. The patient was then placed in a cryostat for long-term cryonic storage.
