June 5, 1999: MORE FREE BOOKS FROM THE IMMORTALIST SOCIETY

With a one-year associate membership ($25, including a one year subscription to the bimonthly magazine The Immortalist), the Immortalist Society has been offering a free book, either The Prospect of Immortality or Man into Superman. However, these books are also available free on this web site. We are now offering a selection of other free books, one of which may be chosen instead. Some are new or in new condition, some are obviously used but in generally good condition. Usually there is only one copy of each available, so if there is one in particular that appeals to you it may be advisable to act quickly. The following are currently available:

NONFICTION:

Maximum Life Span, Roy L. Walford, M.D., Norton, 1983 hard cover. Theories of aging and the author's own dietary program. A classic.

Immortality: How Science is Extending Your Life Span and Changing the World, Ben Bova, Ph.D., Avon, 1998 hard cover. A survey of anti-aging past and prospects.

Life Without Disease: The Pursuit of Medical Utopia, William B. Schwartz, M.D., University of California Press, hard cover, 1998.

The Miracle of MSM: The Natural Solution for Pain, Stanley W. Jacob, M.D.; Ronald M. Lawrence, M.D., Ph.D.; and Martin Zucker; Putnam, hard cover, 1999.

Prolongevity II, Albert Rosenfeld, Knopf, hard cover, 1985. A survey of anti-aging theories and results-one of the best and most careful.

Grow Young with HGH, Ronald Klatz, D.O., with Carol Kahn; Harper Perennial, paperback, 1998 (hard cover 1997). All about human growth hormone.

Becoming Immortal: Nanotechnology, You, and the Demise of Death, Wesley M. DuCharme, Ph.D., hard cover, Blue Creek 1995. An advocacy of cryonics.

The Omega Diet: The Lifesaving Nutritional Program Based on the Diet of the Island of Crete; Artemis P. Simopoulos, M.D., and Jo Robinson; paperback, Harper Perennial, 1999.

Miracle Cures: Dramatic New Scientific Discoveries Revealing the Healing Poswer of Herbs, Vitamins, and Other Natural Remedies; Jean Carper, hard cover, Harper Collins 1997.

Wie der Mensch den Tod Besiegt: Technische Verfahrenb zur Unsterblichkeit, Klaus Reinhard; German language hard cover, Orac, 1987. Advocates cryonics.

FICTION:

The Crock of Gold, James Stephens, Dover paperback 1997, first published in 1912. A delightful Irish fairy tale with some faint resonances for cryonicists. Characters include the Grey Woman of Dun Gortin and the Thin Woman of Inis Magrath, whose enmity is more valuable than the friendship of angels; the gods Pan and Angus Og; the maid Catilin who must choose between the gods; the Leprechauns of Gort na Cloca Mora, and several others. Not to be missed.

Jurgen: A Comedy of Justice, James Branch Cabell, Dover paperback 1977, reprinted in 1999, originally published in 1919. A classic. This was the inspiration for Robert Heinlein's novel Job: A Comedy of Justice, which used one of Cabell's characters, Koshchei the Deathless, Maker of Things As They Are.

The Worm Ouroboros, E.R. Eddison, Boni hard cover, 1926, reasonably good condition. Another classic-fantasy set on the planet Mercury. Warring races include the Demons (these are the good guys, including the Lords Goldry Bluszco and Brandoch Daha), Witches (bad guys), and sundry others including Imps, Goblins, and Ghouls.

The World Below, S. Fowler Wright, Longmans hard cover 1930, good condition. A sci-fi classic, with a modern protagonist transported to the far future. Slightly reminiscent of Gulliver's Travels in that it uses imaginary races to comment on the author's own times.

The Revolt of the Angels, Anatole France, Dodd Mead hard cover 1914, good condition. The classic tale of Lucifer's war with God. Angels visit post-Revolutionary France.

SPECIAL OFFER--FREE BOOKS

For a limited time, new members or associate members of the Immortalist Society will be given an additional free book (besides the choice smentioned previously), which you may choose from the list below. New members of the Cryonics Institute (either Option One or Option Two) may also choose one. New members of both may choose two.

Why? Not to insult your intelligence; no one makes such a decision just to get a book. But human psychology is strange, and sometimes we will use a little thing like a bonus gift to trigger a decision we were going to make anyway. So feel free. Send us a note with your membership application naming your choice of book(s). Supplies are limited-often only one copy of each title mentioned-so promptness is encouraged.

(How can we do it? Members donate the books-pre-owned, but many in mint condition.)

Disclaimer: Needless to say, we do not necessarily endorse the opinions of the authors nor vouch for their expertise.

Non-Fiction:

Greetings, Carbon Based Bipeds. Collected essays of Arthur C. Clarke. St. Martin's Press, 1999. Hard cover, mint condition, 558 pages, list price $35.

A View From the Year 3000: A Ranking of the 100 Most Influential Persons of All Time. Michael H. Hart, Poseidon Press, 1999, quality paperback, 430 pages, mint condition. (The people ranked are real if past or contemporaneous, conjectural if dated later than the 20th century.)

Encyclopedia of Nutritional Supplements, M.T. Murray, Prima Press, 1996. Quality paperback, 559 pages, mint condition. Detailed profiles and discussions of many nutritional supplements.

The Anti-Aging Zone, Barry Sears, Harper-Collins, 1999. Hard cover, 415 pages, mint condition. The author's recommendations for dietary regimen for health and longer life, with voluminous scientific citations.

The Conscious Universe: The Scientific Truth of Psychic Phenomena, by Dean Radin, Harper 1997, hard cover, 362 pages, mint condition. (We're not convinced by any means, but it's interesting.)

Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies, by Jared Diamond, Norton 1999, quality paperback, 480 pages, mint condition. President Clinton mentioned it as part of his vacation reading, if that's any recommendation. Again, we have lots of disagreements, but the question of why and when societies succeeded or failed is fascinating.

Our Dumb Century, one hundred years of headlines from The Onion, Three Rivers Press 1999, large size paperback, 164 pages, mint condition. Spoof articles--very funny, but the print is very small.

Fiction:

Cosm, Gregory Benford, Avon 1998. Universe-in-a-bottle novel. Hardcover, 344 pages, mint condition.

The Still, David Feintuch, Warner 1997. Quality paperback, 579 pages, very good condition. Sword and sorcery, by the author of the Seafort saga.

One for the Morning Glory, John Barnes, Tor 1996. Hard cover, 319 pages, mint condition. Fantasy this time from the author better known for science fiction.

Finity, John Barnes, Tor 1999. Hard cover, 303 pages, mint condition. A parallel-worlds novel.

Mother of Storms, John Barnes, Tor, 1994. Paperback, 560 pages. Good condition. A well-regarded disaster novel.

Job: A Comedy of Justice, Robert Heinlein, Del Rey 1984, paperback, 439 pages, decent condition. Heinlein fans of course will like it-even like to re-read it-and there will be special interest for those familiar with Jurgen, from which Heinlein blithely steals.

Slant, Greg Bear, Tor 1997. Paperback, 503 pages, good condition. Nanotech future.

Self Discovery, Vladimir Savchenko, with introduction by Theodore Sturgeon, Collier 1979. Paperback, 305 pages, fair condition. Semi-comic novel about vat-grown clones and modified clones.
